Fanless Fiber-Linked Switching for Industrial Ethernet Networks

IE-3505-8T3S-E is a fanless, managed Layer 3 industrial switch with eight 10/100/1000 RJ-45 access ports and three fixed Gigabit SFP uplinks. The DIN rail chassis belongs to the IE3500 Rugged family and ships with Network Essentials, connecting locally powered Ethernet equipment rather than supplying endpoint power. Local administration and centralized management are available for standalone installations or larger industrial estates. The Cisco IE3500 Rugged Series supports industrial automation networks that combine copper device connections with fiber links. IE-3505-8P3S-E adds PoE+ to the copper interfaces for endpoints requiring switch-supplied power. The advanced modular chassis also accepts compatible expansion hardware without changing the fixed uplink architecture, so additional connections can be specified separately from the base configuration.

IE-3505-8T3S-E price is $4,528.65, a 29.5% saving from the Cisco list price of $6,421.00. IE-3505-8T3S-E is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

Line-rate forwarding across all ports and packet sizes preserves the supported interface rates without relying on a reduced packet-size profile. Static routing, RIP, OSPF, OSPFv3, and PBR provide the Network Essentials routing functions; BGP, EIGRP, and IS-IS require Network Advantage instead. IE-3505-8T3S-E handles 24000 unicast MAC addresses and provides 5.1 GB of user-accessible flash for system and configuration files. PRP, HSR, and DLR support industrial redundancy arrangements, alongside REP and MRP. LACP aggregates Ethernet links, while RSTP and MSTP control Layer 2 topology. MACsec-128 protects eligible links, and PROFINET, CIP EtherNet/IP, and IEEE 1588 PTP v2 support industrial communications. Two alarm inputs and one alarm output connect network or environmental conditions to external signaling equipment. 41W consumption, measured at 12V, establishes the base demand for external power sizing before expansion loads are added. Dual DC inputs accept separate external sources rather than internal redundant power modules.

Ordering

ORM Systems supplies IE-3505-8T3S-E new sealed or certified refurbished; new orders carry up to a 3-year extended ORM warranty, refurbished orders carry up to 1 year, and every condition has 30-day returns, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, and optics bay recognition, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify this switch's condition, quantity, external power arrangement, and required accessories on the PO. POs are accepted, government orders qualify for Net-30, and enterprise or volume orders have RMA with advance replacement through UK, EU, US, and MEA stock/RMA coverage.

Buying Notes

Optional management subscription paths

Standalone switching requires no subscription. Optional Cisco DNA Essentials or DNA Advantage starts at three years; DNA Advantage requires Network Advantage. Meraki Enterprise and Meraki Advantage provide the separate cloud-management licensing paths.

Industrial optics temperature requirement

Full industrial-temperature fiber operation requires industrial-rated optics such as GLC-SX-MM-RGD=. Nonindustrial transceivers reduce the permitted operating temperature, so specify fiber type, reach, and temperature rating alongside IE-3505-8T3S-E before ordering.

Best For

Cabinet Port Expansion

When a control cabinet needs additional wired connections, IEM-3500-16T= adds 16 Gigabit copper ports and brings the system to 27 interfaces. The expansion hardware depends on the host and cannot operate independently. Specify IEM-3500-16T=, its additional 11W demand, and the required cabinet space before completing the PO.

Replacement Unit Staging

When staging replacement hardware with portable configuration storage, optional SD-IE-16GB= provides 16 GB for Swap Drive and is not included with the base switch. Removable storage supports transferring system files during replacement. Add SD-IE-16GB= to the PO and establish the configuration-copy procedure before preparing replacement units.

Multi-Site Cabinet Standardization

When repeating cabinet builds across industrial sites, installation clearance becomes part of the procurement drawing. The switch requires 25 mm clearance above, below, at the sides, and in front; vertical mounting is required. Confirm the enclosure layout and grounding hardware before standardizing the purchase order.

Not Suitable If

10G fiber uplinks

IE-3505-8T3S-E limits its fixed fiber uplinks to 1G. IE-3500-8T3X-E provides three 10G-capable uplinks, but does not provide the IE3505-only PRP and HSR capabilities.

PoE-powered copper endpoints

IE-3505-8T3S-E does not supply PoE from its copper ports and cannot accept PoE expansion modules. IE-3505-8P3S-E provides eight PoE+ ports with a shared 240W base budget.

BGP or EIGRP routing

IE-3505-8T3S-E excludes BGP, EIGRP, and IS-IS under Network Essentials. IE-3505-8T3S-A supplies Network Advantage with the same copper and fiber port configuration for those routing requirements.

Questions & Answers

What does each segment of IE-3505-8T3S-E mean?

IE-3505-8T3S-E identifies the advanced modular IE3500 industrial configuration with eight Gigabit copper ports, three Gigabit SFP ports, and Network Essentials. IE-3505 identifies the advanced modular variant; 8 gives the copper-port count, T denotes data-only copper, 3S describes the three SFP interfaces, and E identifies the network license tier.

How is IE-3505-8T3S-E managed?

IE-3505-8T3S-E is managed through WebUI, CLI over SSH or Telnet, local USB-C or RJ-45 console, SNMP, NETCONF, RESTCONF, gRPC telemetry, Cisco Catalyst Center, Meraki dashboard, and CIP-based industrial tools. Meraki base-switch management requires IOS XE 26.1.1 or later; expansion-module cloud management is outside the initial support.

Is IE-3505-8T3S-E discontinued?

Cisco has not announced an end-of-sale date for IE3500 Rugged. IE-3505-8T3S-E remains an available industrial switching model rather than a discontinued part. The end-of-sale milestones attached to older IE4000 hardware apply to those predecessors, not to this switch or its Network Essentials ordering suffix.

What conditions and warranty does ORM offer for IE-3505-8T3S-E?

IE-3505-8T3S-E is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with a separate Cisco five-year limited hardware warranty for the series. ORM provides up to a 3-year extended warranty on new orders and up to 1 year on refurbished orders. Both conditions have 30-day returns, terms apply; refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested.

Which licensing paths are available for IE-3505-8T3S-E?

IE-3505-8T3S-E includes perpetual Network Essentials; standalone operation requires no subscription. Optional Cisco DNA Essentials and DNA Advantage have a three-year minimum term, with DNA Advantage requiring Network Advantage. Meraki Enterprise and Meraki Advantage are the cloud-management tiers. The perpetual Network Advantage upgrade uses IE3500-NW-A=; management subscriptions remain separate from the network license.

Which older switches does IE-3505-8T3S-E replace?

IE-3505-8T3S-E replaces the discontinued IE-4000-16GT4G-E, IE-4000-16T4G-E, IE-4000-4TC4G-E, IE-4000-8GS4G-E, IE-4000-8GT4G-E, IE-4000-8S4G-E, and IE-4000-8T4G-E, which reached end of sale on July 26, 2024. The base switch has a different interface mix from several predecessors, so copper density and fiber requirements must be matched before ordering replacement hardware.

What uplink speeds and optics does IE-3505-8T3S-E support?

IE-3505-8T3S-E provides three fixed SFP uplinks supporting 1G or 100M fiber connections, not 10G. Industrial-rated GLC-SX-MM-RGD= supports Gigabit multimode links; nonindustrial optics require temperature derating. Select transceivers for the installed fiber type and reach, and specify the required optics as accessory line items on the purchase order.

How is IE-3505-8T3S-E powered?

IE-3505-8T3S-E uses dual external DC inputs rated 12-48V nominal and 9.6-60V absolute, consuming 41W when measured at 12V. Either input can power the switch; with both present, the higher-voltage source supplies the load and the other continues operating if a source fails. PWR-IE50W-AC= is a compatible external option for the base switch.

Which expansion modules can IE-3505-8T3S-E use?

IE-3505-8T3S-E accepts non-PoE expansion modules including IEM-3500-8T=, IEM-3500-16T=, IEM-3500-8S=, IEM-3500-6T2S=, and IEM-3500-14T2S=. PoE expansion modules require a PoE-capable host and therefore cannot be installed on this model. Expansion hardware depends on the base switch rather than operating independently, and installation or removal requires the assembly to be de-energized.

Does the IE3500 Rugged advanced variant support PRP and HSR?

IE-3505-8T3S-E supports PRP, HSR, and DLR under Network Essentials, alongside REP and MRP industrial redundancy functions. These IE3505 capabilities distinguish the advanced hardware variant from standard IE3500 models. Jumbo frames are limited to 2000 bytes when PRP, HSR, DLR, or ERSPAN is used in the configuration.

What is the difference between IE-3505-8T3S-E and IE-3505-8P3S-E?

IE-3505-8P3S-E powers eight copper ports with PoE+, while IE-3505-8T3S-E provides data-only copper ports. The powered model has a shared 240W base PoE budget; both have three Gigabit SFP interfaces. Specify the P variant when endpoints need switch-supplied power, or the T variant when endpoint power is provided separately.

What is the difference between IE-3505-8T3S-E and IE-3505-8T3S-A?

IE-3505-8T3S-A includes Network Advantage, whereas IE-3505-8T3S-E includes Network Essentials on the same eight-copper, three-SFP configuration. Network Advantage adds BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS, and VRF-lite. Choose the E variant for Essentials routing, or the A variant when advanced routing and virtualization must be included in the initial order.

What is the difference between IE-3505-8T3S-E and IE-3500-8T3X-E?

IE-3500-8T3X-E offers three 10G-capable uplinks, whereas IE-3505-8T3S-E uses three 1G SFP uplinks. Both provide eight Gigabit copper access ports and Network Essentials. The 10G variant fits higher-speed fiber aggregation; the 1G variant fits designs that keep the fixed access and uplink interfaces at Gigabit rates.

What operating temperatures does IE3500 Rugged support?

IE3500 Rugged supports -40°C to 60°C in a sealed enclosure, -40°C to 70°C in a vented enclosure, and -40°C to 75°C with forced airflow. The higher-temperature ratings require their specified airflow conditions rather than fanless operation alone. Specify the cabinet cooling conditions and industrial-rated optics before completing the order.
