Powered Copper Expansion for Industrial Ethernet Networks

IEM-3400-8P adds eight Gigabit PoE/PoE+ copper ports to a compatible industrial PoE switch; the module cannot operate independently. Part of the Catalyst IE3400 Rugged family, the expansion hardware joins its host in a DIN rail assembly for powered cameras, phones, wireless access points, and sensors. System management and uplinks remain with the host rather than becoming separate module functions. IEM-3400-8T= provides the corresponding non-PoE copper expansion when connected equipment uses an independent power source.

IEM-3400-8P price for new stock is $4,410.00, a 23.3% saving from the Cisco list price of $5,749.14. IEM-3400-8P refurb price is $3,913.35. IEM-3400-8P is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

20W operating consumption excludes PoE output, so supply sizing must allow for module electronics separately from powered-device demand. 240W is the additional PoE capacity ceiling, supporting a combined system ceiling of 480W with a compatible host and sufficient supply capacity. IEM-3400-8P uses fanless convection cooling, without eliminating required ventilation around the assembled hardware. The Catalyst IE3400 expansion module supports sealed-enclosure operation from -40°C to 60°C; the relevant thermal limit is the air temperature inside the cabinet, not the room outside it.

Ordering

Order IEM-3400-8P in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, with host hardware and power requirements identified on the PO. Certified refurbished modules are inspected and bench-tested, with every port checked for rated-speed links and PoE output verified under load on every powered port. ORM's new-unit warranty is up to a 3-year extended term; certified refurbished coverage is up to 1 year, with 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply. For enterprise and volume orders, PO acceptance, Net-30 for government, RMA with advance replacement, and regional stock and RMA in the UK, EU, US, and MEA are available.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Keep licensing with the host

IEM-3400-8P uses its host's perpetual Network Essentials or Network Advantage license; SGT/SGACL requires Network Advantage. Optional Cisco Catalyst Center Essentials and Advantage subscriptions start at three years; Catalyst Center Advantage also requires Network Advantage.

Schedule a powered-down installation

IEM-3400-8P requires the host switch to be de-energized before attachment. Schedule an installation outage; the expansion connection must not be engaged while the host is energized.

Best For

Existing Switch Expansion

An existing IE-3400-8P2S-E or IE-3400-8P2S-A installation needs additional endpoint connections without replacing its base switch. The assembled system reaches 18 Ethernet ports with this expansion module fitted. Before the PO, confirm the installed host identity and proposed endpoint count, rather than ordering the module as a complete switch.

Industrial Cabinet Rollouts

An industrial cabinet rollout needs ventilation space around the assembled switch, not merely room for the module body. Installation requires 50.8 mm minimum clearance at the top, bottom, sides, and front. Verify the enclosure layout and unobstructed airflow before specifying module quantities for repeated installations.

Not Suitable If

Standalone switching without a base

IEM-3400-8P cannot operate as an independent switch. The expansion module requires a compatible IE3400 PoE base and does not replace the host's switching or management functions.

Fiber ports on the expansion module

IEM-3400-8P adds copper ports rather than fiber cages. IEM-3400-8S= provides eight Gigabit SFP expansion ports instead, without PoE output for attached equipment.

Expansion of a non-PoE host

IEM-3400-8P requires a PoE-capable IE3400 base. A non-PoE base cannot accept this PoE expansion module, regardless of the external power supply available.

Questions & Answers

What does the IEM-3400-8P part number mean?

IEM-3400-8P identifies an IE3400 expansion module with eight copper Gigabit Ethernet PoE/PoE+ ports: IEM identifies the expansion-module type, 3400 the family, 8 the port count, and P the powered copper configuration. IEM-3400-8P= is another ordering form for this expansion hardware, not a standalone switch or network-license tier.

Which base switches support IEM-3400-8P?

IEM-3400-8P supports the IE-3400-8P2S-E and IE-3400-8P2S-A PoE base switches. PoE expansion requires a PoE-capable base; a non-PoE IE3400 host is not supported. Include the exact host identity and existing supply arrangement when specifying an expansion order rather than treating every IE3400 configuration as interchangeable.

How is the Catalyst IE3400 Rugged expansion module managed?

The Catalyst IE3400 Rugged expansion module is managed through its host using WebUI, console CLI, SSH, Telnet, SNMP, NETCONF, RESTCONF, or Cisco Catalyst Center. Industrial options include CIP-based tools and PROFINET through STEP 7 or TIA Portal. Configuration belongs to the host, not an independent module-management interface.

What is the lifecycle status of Catalyst IE3400 Rugged?

Cisco has not announced an end-of-sale date for Catalyst IE3400 Rugged. IEM-3400-8P belongs to that series; software-release retirement dates do not establish hardware retirement for this module. Keep the exact hardware PID separate from the host's installed software release when planning maintenance and support.

What condition and warranty options does ORM Systems offer for IEM-3400-8P?

IEM-3400-8P is offered new sealed or certified refurbished; Cisco's platform warranty is five-year limited hardware coverage. ORM provides up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units. Returns are available for 30 days on every condition; terms apply. Cisco coverage is separate from ORM's order warranty.

Which licenses does IEM-3400-8P require?

IEM-3400-8P has no standalone network-license tier; its IE3400 host uses perpetual Network Essentials or Network Advantage licensing. Optional Cisco Catalyst Center Essentials and Advantage subscriptions have a three-year minimum term. Catalyst Center Advantage requires Network Advantage on the host, so specify host licensing separately from the expansion-module hardware.

What power allowance does IEM-3400-8P require?

IEM-3400-8P adds up to 240W of PoE capacity, with a compatible PoE host supporting up to 480W across the system. The module itself consumes 20W excluding PoE output. Available endpoint power still depends on reserving enough supply capacity for both the base switch and the module.

Can I install IEM-3400-8P while the host is powered?

No, IEM-3400-8P must not be attached while its host switch is energized. Disconnect host power before joining the side expansion connection, then align the module and secure the assembly. This is a powered-down installation task, not a hot-add operation on an operating switch.

What is the difference between IEM-3400-8P and IEM-3400-8T=?

IEM-3400-8P provides eight Gigabit copper ports with PoE/PoE+, whereas IEM-3400-8T= provides eight Gigabit copper ports without PoE. Both are IE3400 expansion modules rather than standalone switches. Powered expansion serves endpoints drawing power over Ethernet; non-PoE expansion serves equipment with its own power source.

What is the difference between IEM-3400-8P and IEM-3400-8S=?

IEM-3400-8P adds eight Gigabit PoE+ RJ-45 ports, while IEM-3400-8S= adds eight Gigabit SFP ports. The distinction is powered copper attachment versus fiber expansion, rather than a higher Ethernet speed. Copper powered endpoints fit the former; installations requiring additional fiber connections fit the latter.

What is the difference between IEM-3400-8P and IEM-3300-16P=?

IEM-3400-8P adds eight Gigabit PoE/PoE+ ports; IEM-3300-16P= adds 16. Both are expansion modules supported with compatible IE3400 PoE hosts, not independent switches. For port-count selection, the eight-port option matches a smaller addition of powered copper endpoints, while the 16-port module addresses a larger expansion requirement.
