Cloud-Managed Access Switching for Branch Wiring Closets

MS250-48-HW is a cloud-managed Layer 3 access switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet copper ports and four fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks. The non-PoE configuration connects separately powered endpoints in branch and small-campus networks, using a 1U rack-mounted chassis with integrated mounting brackets. Cisco Meraki MS250 combines physical stacking with centralized administration, while its fixed uplink architecture requires no additional network card. Two dedicated rear stacking interfaces leave the front-panel uplinks available for network connections. The discontinued MS250-48LP-HW differs by adding a shared 370W PoE+ budget; the non-PoE version carries no endpoint power allocation. For buyers maintaining an installed base, this configuration preserves Gigabit access density without adding powered access ports to the purchase.

MS250-48-HW price for new stock is $1,042.65. MS250-48-HW refurb price is $280.35. MS250-48-HW is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

176 Gbps switching capacity provides the switching fabric for the copper access ports and fixed uplinks. 127.98 Mpps forwarding supports packet processing independently of the stacking interconnect. Static routing and OSPFv2 provide routed connectivity, while VRRP supplies Warm Spare operation; OSPF and Warm Spare cannot operate concurrently. MS250-48-HW supports 32000 MAC forwarding entries for endpoint learning, and 4094 VLANs provide segmentation across attached networks. STP and RSTP address switching loops, with BPDU guard, root guard and loop guard supplying additional safeguards. LACP supports aggregated links, including multichassis aggregates across physically stacked switches. Eight traffic queues include six configurable queues for traffic prioritization. A 44W full-load draw provides the equipment power figure for electrical planning. One MA-PWR-250WAC ships with the chassis, and a second MA-PWR-250WAC can occupy the redundant supply position. The 100–240V AC input accommodates supported mains supplies, while variable-speed fans provide active cooling.

Ordering

MS250-48-HW is available from ORM Systems in new sealed and certified refurbished condition, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units; returns are available for 30 days on every condition, and terms apply. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on, POST, rated-speed port links, clean boot, optics bay recognition, stack adapter negotiation, PSU status and fan status, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify condition and accessory quantities before submitting the PO. Enterprise and volume orders support PO acceptance, Net-30 for government, RMA with advance replacement, and regional stock and RMA across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Separate cloud license required

MS250-48-HW requires a separate Meraki Enterprise license with a minimum one-year term; three-, five-, seven- and ten-year terms also exist. Match the entitlement and duration to the destination organization before placing the hardware order.

Support horizon limits planning

MS250-48-HW reached end of sale on August 8, 2025, with support ending August 8, 2030. C9300L-48T-4X-M is the replacement for purchases that require the successor rather than installed-base continuity.

Stack cables ordered separately

Physical stack connections require MA-CBL-40G-50CM, MA-CBL-40G-1M or MA-CBL-40G-3M. Select the 0.5 m, 1 m or 3 m cable against the rack layout and include the required cable quantities on the purchase order.

Best For

Distributed Branch Standardization

When multiple branches need the same centrally administered configuration, Meraki configuration templates and role-based administration provide a shared operating approach. The cloud-managed configuration model differs from local command-line provisioning, so identify the destination organization, administrator permissions and template assignment before specifying the hardware order.

Local Address Services

When a branch refresh includes moving address services onto the access switch, DHCP server and DHCP relay capabilities become purchasing requirements rather than secondary features. Decide which networks receive local address allocation and which forward requests elsewhere, then include the required configuration responsibilities in the purchase scope.

Lab Acceptance Testing

When a lab purchase must reproduce larger Ethernet frames before production changes, support for 9578-byte frames supplies a specific acceptance criterion. Remote packet capture and cable testing also support fault isolation during staging. Specify the frame-size tests, link checks and captured evidence required before accepting the order.

Not Suitable If

PoE power for attached endpoints

MS250-48-HW supplies no PoE output. Phones, cameras and access points attached to its copper ports require a separate power source rather than power from this chassis.

Concurrent OSPF and Warm Spare

The MS250 cannot operate OSPF and VRRP Warm Spare concurrently. A design requiring both functions simultaneously needs a different routing or redundancy arrangement.

Cisco support beyond August 2030

Cisco support for MS250-48-HW ends August 8, 2030. For a current replacement instead of a discontinued chassis, evaluate C9300L-48T-4X-M and its applicable support terms.

Questions & Answers

What does each part of MS250-48-HW mean?

MS250-48-HW identifies MS250 switch hardware with 48 Gigabit access ports. MS250 names the series, 48 identifies the access-port configuration, and HW identifies the hardware item rather than its separate Enterprise license. This exact configuration is non-PoE and includes four fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks.

How is the MS250 managed?

The MS250 is configured and administered through the web-based Meraki dashboard rather than a traditional switch configuration CLI. Central management includes scheduled firmware upgrades, event logs and role-based access. SNMP and SYSLOG support integration with other monitoring systems, while remote tools provide packet capture and cable testing.

Is MS250-48-HW end of sale?

Yes, MS250-48-HW reached end of sale on August 8, 2025, and its end-of-support date is August 8, 2030. C9300L-48T-4X-M is the replacement. Remaining hardware can serve installed-base requirements, but the purchase plan must account for the fixed end of Cisco support.

What condition and warranty options does ORM offer for MS250-48-HW?

ORM offers MS250-48-HW new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Returns are available for 30 days on every condition; terms apply. Cisco's lifetime hardware warranty is separate, subject to eligibility, and ends August 8, 2030.

Which license does MS250-48-HW require?

MS250-48-HW requires a separate Meraki Enterprise license, available in one-, three-, five-, seven- and ten-year terms. The minimum term is one year. The hardware item does not replace that entitlement, so the order must identify the destination organization and the required license duration separately.

Which older switch does MS250-48-HW replace?

MS250-48-HW replaced MS320-48-HW, the discontinued 48-port Gigabit Layer 3 cloud-managed switch. MS320-48-HW reached end of sale on March 31, 2017, and end of support on March 31, 2024. MS250-48-HW is also discontinued, so a new-generation replacement purchase should evaluate C9300L-48T-4X-M.

How many switches can MS250-48-HW physically stack?

MS250-48-HW supports physical stacks of eight switches with 80 Gbps stacking bandwidth through two dedicated stacking interfaces. Supported cables are MA-CBL-40G-50CM, MA-CBL-40G-1M and MA-CBL-40G-3M. Physical stacking is distinct from Virtual Stacking, which groups ports for centralized management without requiring physical stack connections.

Can the MS250 run OSPF and VRRP together?

No, the MS250 cannot operate OSPF and VRRP Warm Spare concurrently. Static routing, OSPFv2 and Warm Spare are supported functions, but the dynamic-routing and Warm Spare operating modes are mutually exclusive. Select the required routing or redundancy arrangement before finalizing the configuration and hardware purchase.

Does MS250-48-HW include redundant power supplies?

MS250-48-HW includes one MA-PWR-250WAC, not a redundant pair. A second MA-PWR-250WAC is ordered separately to populate the additional supply position. Both supply positions support hot-swappable modules, so the purchase order should distinguish the standard single-supply configuration from a chassis supplied with two MA-PWR-250WAC units.

What is the difference between MS250-48-HW and MS250-48LP-HW?

MS250-48-HW has no PoE output, while MS250-48LP-HW supplies a shared 370W PoE+ budget. Both configurations are discontinued members of the MS250 series. The non-PoE version suits separately powered endpoints; the LP version addresses powered endpoints within its shared budget when maintaining an existing installation.

What is the difference between MS250-48-HW and MS250-48FP-HW?

MS250-48-HW ships with MA-PWR-250WAC, whereas MS250-48FP-HW ships with MA-PWR-1025WAC. Both discontinued models accept a separately purchased second matching supply. The first configuration serves non-PoE access requirements; the FP configuration suits an installed-base purchase requiring its higher-capacity endpoint-power arrangement and the corresponding MA-PWR-1025WAC supply.

What is the difference between MS250-48-HW and C9300L-48T-4X-M?

MS250-48-HW is the discontinued MS250 model, while C9300L-48T-4X-M is its replacement. The MS250 hardware has a fixed support endpoint of August 8, 2030. Existing-estate continuity is the reason to retain the older model; buyers moving to the successor should specify C9300L-48T-4X-M and its required licensing.

What uplinks does the Cisco Meraki MS250 provide?

The Cisco Meraki MS250 provides four fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks on each model. The uplink interfaces are built into the chassis rather than supplied by a removable network card. SFP and SFP+ connectivity uses compatible pluggable accessories, so the connection type must be specified alongside the switch.
