WS-C4006 identifies the six-slot Catalyst 4006 modular chassis, rather than a fixed-port Ethernet configuration. The enclosure accommodates a supervisor engine and interface modules, so the installed cards determine the access connections, uplinks, and switching functions delivered with an order. The Catalyst 4000 family supports copper and fiber Ethernet modules, allowing an existing installation to retain its interface arrangement when replacing an enclosure. Layer 2 operation is available with Supervisor Engine II; other supported supervisors provide different software and routing capabilities. A chassis purchase therefore needs an explicit component inventory rather than an assumed port configuration. The smaller WS-C4003 has three slots, making enclosure capacity the relevant distinction between these legacy chassis models. Confirm the supervisor, interface cards, power supplies, and cooling assembly included in the quoted configuration.

30 Gbps backplane capacity describes the chassis interconnect; forwarding performance and software capabilities depend on the installed supervisor. WS-C4006 supports Supervisor Engine II, Supervisor Engine III, and Supervisor Engine IV, but does not support redundant supervisor operation within the enclosure. Management follows the supervisor and software combination rather than the chassis identifier alone. Available Catalyst 4000 management methods include a console CLI, Telnet, a web interface, SNMP, and CiscoWorks applications. Power redundancy also requires configuration-specific sizing: two installed supplies do not automatically establish redundant operation. The default two-primary-plus-one-redundant arrangement needs a third supply for redundancy, while one-primary-plus-one-redundant operation can accommodate only configurations whose power requirements fit that arrangement. These distinctions matter when transferring populated modules from another enclosure. Preserve the component inventory and power configuration together when specifying a replacement assembly.
Specify WS-C4006 in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, and request an itemized configuration before placing the order. Certified refurbished assemblies are inspected and bench-tested, including power-on, POST, clean boot, module bay recognition, PSU status, and fan status; managed units also have firmware verified and configurations wiped to factory default. ORM provides up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition; terms apply. Submit the required component inventory and quantity on the PO; ORM accepts POs, offers Net-30 for government, and provides RMA with advance replacement across UK, EU, US, and MEA regional operations.

When an existing installation needs an enclosure spare, record the retained supervisor and every interface module before selecting the replacement assembly. A WS-X4013 supervisor identifies a particular hardware configuration, not every possible Catalyst 4006 arrangement. Specify which components will transfer and which must be supplied with the order.
When staging must reproduce an older switch configuration, match the supervisor before selecting the software image. Supervisor Engine II uses Catalyst OS, whereas Supervisor Engine III uses Cisco IOS Software. Record the required engine, software version, and installed modules on the purchase order rather than specifying the enclosure alone.
Redundant supervisors within one chassis
WS-C4006 cannot accommodate an active supervisor with an internal standby supervisor. Redundant power supplies do not remove that supervisor limitation or provide supervisor failover.
Operation above 40°C
The Catalyst 4006 operating range ends at 40°C. An installation requiring continuous operation above that temperature exceeds the chassis environmental rating.

WS-C4006 identifies the six-slot Catalyst 4006 modular chassis, not a fixed Ethernet port count. The complete identifier names the enclosure model; installed supervisors and interface modules determine the populated switch configuration. A purchase order should distinguish the chassis from supervisor bundles and specify the components included in the supplied assembly.
WS-C4006 is managed through its installed supervisor, with Catalyst 4000 management options including a console CLI, Telnet, a web interface, SNMP, and CiscoWorks with CiscoView. Availability follows the supervisor and software combination. Match the quoted supervisor and image to the management methods required for the existing installation.
WS-C4006 must be distinguished from supervisor bundles when assessing lifecycle dates. The discontinued WS-C4006-S3 bundle reached end of sale on July 26, 2004, and last support on July 26, 2009. Those milestones apply to that bundle and should not automatically be assigned to an unsuffixed chassis purchase.
ORM offers WS-C4006 new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Returns cover 30 days on every condition; terms apply. ORM coverage is separate from Cisco's original hardware warranty and does not extend Cisco service eligibility.
WS-C4006 supports Supervisor Engine II, Supervisor Engine III, and Supervisor Engine IV, but only a single supervisor operates in this chassis. These engines do not provide identical software or forwarding functions. Specify the required engine explicitly when ordering a populated assembly or transferring components from an existing switch.
WS-C4006 does not automatically provide power redundancy simply because two supplies are installed. The default two-primary-plus-one-redundant mode needs a third supply for redundancy. One-primary-plus-one-redundant mode can use two supplies, but does not support every populated configuration. Size the installed modules against the selected operating mode before ordering.
The Catalyst 4006 chassis has no fixed access-port configuration; Ethernet connections come from the installed supervisor and interface modules. Consequently, the enclosure model does not establish the delivered copper or fiber port population. Specify each installed card and its connector requirements when defining a complete switch assembly.
The Catalyst 4006 chassis measures 444.5 mm high, 438.15 mm wide, and 304.8 mm deep, with a published maximum weight of 24 kg. The enclosure occupies ten rack units. Verify rack space, mounting hardware, and handling arrangements before ordering an enclosure for an existing equipment rack.
WS-C4006 has six module slots, while WS-C4003 has three. Both identifiers describe modular Catalyst 4000 chassis rather than a complete fixed-port configuration. The discontinued WS-C4003 belongs to installations requiring fewer module positions; WS-C4006 accommodates a larger module inventory. Neither comparison establishes identical supervisor compatibility or a current replacement recommendation.
WS-C4006 identifies the chassis, while WS-C4006-S3 identifies a bundle containing Supervisor Engine III, two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, two AC power supplies, and fans. The discontinued bundle is relevant when matching an existing Supervisor Engine III assembly; the unsuffixed chassis identifier requires a separately specified component inventory.
