WS-C4500X-40X-ES is a Layer 3 fiber aggregation switch with 32 built-in 1G/10G interfaces and eight additional interfaces on the included C4KX-NM-8SFP+ uplink module. Enterprise Services is the included network feature license, rather than the IP Base feature set supplied on the discontinued WS-C4500X-32SFP+ sibling. The Cisco Catalyst 4500-X family serves campus aggregation in space-constrained equipment rooms, and this configuration occupies one rack unit with front-to-back airflow. Compatible SFP and SFP+ transceivers let individual connections operate at Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds without replacing the chassis. The non-PoE configuration connects access switches and fiber-attached equipment rather than supplying power to endpoint devices.

800 Gbps switching capacity carries traffic across the full Ethernet configuration, and 250 Mpps IPv4 forwarding defines the hardware packet-processing ceiling. BGP, OSPF and PBR support routed aggregation under Enterprise Services rather than static-only forwarding. WS-C4500X-40X-ES combines 4 GB of onboard memory with a shared 32 MB packet buffer for control processing and queued traffic. Hardware resources support 55000 MAC entries and 256000 IPv4 forwarding entries, while 4094 VLANs and 4094 switched virtual interfaces define segmentation scale. Flexible NetFlow supports 128000 entries for flow visibility, and LACP combines compatible Ethernet links. Hardware control-plane policing limits traffic directed at the CPU independently of the forwarding resources. 400W maximum system consumption is the sizing figure for electrical provisioning, not the 750W rating of C4KX-PWR-750AC-R. Native Ethernet connections stop at 10G; 25G and 100G uplinks are absent.
Specify WS-C4500X-40X-ES in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, with C4KX-PWR-750AC-R for AC input or C4KX-PWR-750DC-R for DC input included on the purchase order. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, optics bay recognition and module bay recognition; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. ORM provides up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition; terms apply. Enterprise and volume orders accept POs, government buyers receive Net-30, and RMA with advance replacement is available through regional stock and RMA operations in the UK, EU, US and MEA.

When a standalone aggregation device needs a paired virtual switching configuration, Catalyst 4500-X requires matching chassis models and Cisco IOS XE 3.4.0SG or later for VSS. The interchassis connection uses Ethernet interfaces, so reserve the necessary data ports and verify the partner's exact model and software before placing the PO.
When staging a switch before shipment to a remote equipment room, the initial serial connection needs CAB-CON-C4K-RJ45, which is not included in the accessory kit. The console uses 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity. Include CAB-CON-C4K-RJ45 and confirm the terminal profile before the PO.
25G access or 100G uplinks
WS-C4500X-40X-ES limits Ethernet connections to 10G. C9500-48Y4C provides 48 25G-capable ports and four 100G-capable uplinks, so the migration also changes port density and uplink architecture.
Active Cisco hardware support
Cisco hardware support for WS-C4500X-40X-ES ended October 31, 2025. C9500-48Y4C is the migration replacement; its 48-port access configuration requires a revised interface and optics plan.

WS-C4500X-40X-ES identifies a Catalyst 4500-X forty-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet configuration with Enterprise Services. The WS-C4500X segment identifies the switch family, 40X identifies the port count and speed class, and ES identifies Enterprise Services. The configuration also specifies front-to-back cooling and excludes power supplies from the base order.
Cisco Catalyst 4500-X supports serial-console management, IP-based CLI access, SNMP, device manager and Cisco Network Assistant. SSH and Telnet provide remote terminal access; Cisco IOS XE 3.11.3aE and later enable SSH and disable Telnet by default. A dedicated 10/100/1000 Ethernet management connection supports out-of-band administration.
Yes, WS-C4500X-40X-ES reached end of sale on October 30, 2020, and Cisco hardware support ended October 31, 2025. Cisco service has therefore ended, including support available through warranty terms. C9500-48Y4C is the migration replacement. Purchasing a new sealed unit does not restart those Cisco lifecycle milestones.
ORM Systems offers WS-C4500X-40X-ES new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty, or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Returns are available for 30 days in either condition; terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty support ended October 31, 2025, so ORM coverage is separate.
WS-C4500X-40X-ES includes the permanent Enterprise Services feature license on a universal Cisco IOS XE image, so the base network license has no subscription term. Cisco DNA Essentials and Cisco DNA Advantage are separate term add-on paths. An ORM hardware condition does not establish ownership of those separate subscription entitlements.
WS-C4500X-40X-ES includes C4KX-NM-8SFP+, providing eight 1G/10G uplink interfaces in addition to the thirty-two built-in interfaces. C4KX-NM-8SFP+ is part of this forty-port configuration rather than an empty expansion bay. Each connection requires a compatible SFP or SFP+ transceiver selected for its speed and link requirements.
WS-C4500X-40X-ES requires separately ordered C4KX-PWR-750AC-R for AC input or C4KX-PWR-750DC-R for DC input, matching its front-to-back airflow. The chassis accepts one or two supplies and permits mixed AC/DC operation. Specify the input arrangement and redundancy requirement on the purchase order rather than assuming either supply ships with the base bundle.
WS-C4500X-40X-ES includes Enterprise Services, whereas WS-C4500X-32SFP+ ships with IP Base. Enterprise Services provides the full Layer 3 feature set, while IP Base provides Layer 2 and basic Layer 3 features. Both models are discontinued. Match Enterprise Services for existing full-routing configurations and IP Base for legacy basic-routing configurations.
WS-C4500X-40X-ES provides forty Ethernet connections, while WS-C4500X-24X-ES provides twenty-four at the same 10G speed class. Both are discontinued Enterprise Services configurations. The forty-port configuration matches legacy aggregation installations with more physical connections; the twenty-four-port configuration corresponds to smaller legacy connection counts without changing the network feature tier.
C9500-48Y4C supports 25G-capable interfaces and 100G-capable uplinks, whereas WS-C4500X-40X-ES limits Ethernet connections to 10G. C9500-48Y4C is the migration replacement for the discontinued model. Retaining the older configuration addresses existing 10G hardware matching; the replacement addresses higher-speed connections and requires a fresh optics and interface plan.
